What is articles in English?

It is difficult to decide whether an English noun needs an article before it, and, if so, which

article (a/an/the) to use. English has two articles a/an and The. A/An is used to modify non-specific / non-particular nouns and The is used to refer to specific or particular nouns.

  • the = definite article
  • a/an = indefinite article

For example: if I say, “Let’s eat the fruit,” I mean a specific fruit. If I say, “Let’s eat a fruit,” I mean any fruit rather than a specific fruit

For example, I bought a mobile – mobile is a singular and countable noun.

I bought the mobiles – mobiles are plural and non-countable noun.

what is articles in english grammarThe indefinite article (a/an):

If the noun is singular and countable, and this is the first time you have mentioned it, then you will usually need the indefinite article: I bought a book – we do not know which book. Measurements and rates also take the indefinite article: Three times a week If the noun starts with a vowel sound, then the article an is used: an eagle, an umbrella,

Notes: an hour If the noun starts with a consonant sound.

Uses of An Article:

Singular noun beginning with a vowel.

For Example an elephant, an apple, an orange.

  1. He is an excellent actor.
  2. She didn’t get an invitation.
  3. I saw an elephant at the zoo.
